INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE

INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF HONG KONG

HKSAR Leisure & Cultural Services Department comprised in 2017 the first Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong in order to prioritize resources and safeguard measures for intangible cultural heritage (ICH) items, especially those of high cultural value and with an urgent need for preservation. And one of those precious and historical items is “Traditional craftsmanship – Technique of Making Hong Kong Cheongsam and Kwan Kwa Wedding Costume”.

Descended from a long line of traditional artisans and skillful tailors, the art of making cheongsam is part of Chinese culture interwoven with Hong Kong history.

Cheongsams are reminiscent of a time when life was simple and happy, when a good day was a romantic walk up Ladder Street, and a vacation was a car ride to the beach. Time has changed, but our love for the timeless elegance and beauty of the cheongsam remains the same.

NATIONAL INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF THE CHEONGSAM

“Technique of Making Hong Kong Cheongsam” has been successfully inscribed onto the Fifth National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) announced by the State Council as of 2021, under the category of "traditional craftsmanship" defined by the Convention for the Safeguarding of the ICH promulgated by UNESCO, affirming the cultural, artistic and artisanal importance of this traditional Chinese garment we know so well.

Karen Chan, founder and designer of cultural lifestyle brand SPARKLE COLLECTION, places great emphasis on preserving and reviving traditional arts and culture, among them the National Intangible Cultural Heritage of the cheongsam. SPARKLE creates modern cheongsams with playful East-meets-West fashion elements, every piece is an exquisite work of art that is gorgeous to look at and a delight to wear.
